04 March 2026

It is with great sadness we convey the passing of Associate Professor Thomas Michael (Mick) Adamson AM.

A founding and emeritus member of the Australasian Sleep Association, eminent sleep clinician Associate Professor Michael Adamson passed away on 22 February 2026.

Mick was 89 years of age and lived a wonderful life and played an enormous role in the development of paediatric sleep medicine in Australia.  He was a pioneer in this field and set up the first paediatric sleep recording system in  Victoria in 1978 at Queen Victoria Hospital with an analogue GRASS recording system.  He received funding to study sleep and breathing patterns in preterm and full-term infants to understand possible causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  In 1987 Queen Victoria Hospital  was relocated to Monash Medical Centre and this one-bed sleep laboratory was the beginning of the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre which Mick led until his retirement in 2003.

ASA extends our deepest condolences to Mick's wife Mary and his family.

Mick's family would love if you would join them in celebrating him and the many lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom and quiet strength.
