PhD scholarships University of Otago, New Zealand

There are three PhD scholarships available as part of the New Zealand Health Research Council Programme Grant Whakatipu Rakatira: improving sleep as a vehicle to grow future healthy leaders.

Each scholarship is associated with a different project with the programme, but all focusing on different approaches to improving sleep and wellbeing amongst children and adolescents. We welcome applications from students from a variety of backgrounds, including (but not limited to) psychology, nutrition, medical or other health programmes and indigenous health. We particularly welcome applications from Māori and Pacific students, but are open to all tairua (students). Students from Australia are welcome to apply.

The three projects are:
1. A Māori-led intervention to improve sleep and wellbeing in pēpi (infants) and their whānau (families), working with Māori health providers around Aotearoa
2. An online MOST intervention aimed at teenagers who do not sleep well that is designed to be acceptable and scalable
3. A stepped-wedge trial with several high schools to trial delayed school start times to determine the impact on health and wellbeing in teenagers

All projects have been broadly designed but there remains capacity for input into development from the PhD candidate. We envisage each project starting sometime in 2025 or early 2026 at the latest.

For all enquiries please contact Professor Rachael Taylor at [email protected] or Professor Barbara Galland at [email protected]
