Vale Dr Murray Johns

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Dr Murray Johns passed away in early January following a long illness. Murray was an emeritus member of the ASA and a giant in the field of sleep medicine. In a career spanning over 50 years, he had enormous impact on the field of sleep medicine. In particular, he is best known for the development of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the development of computerised sleep diagnostic systems and the development of real-time drowsiness detection. Murray was a wonderful human being and loved and respected by so many. He will be greatly missed but leaves an enduring legacy for sleep medicine and the ASA.

We encourage ASA members to view the following links here
and here which summarise some of his achievements, particularly noting that in 2020, Murray was awarded the Distinguished Achievement award of the ASA.

We also provide a link here to Murray's celebration of life where ASA members can leave a note of memory and condolence.
