The ASA has joined forces once again with the Sleep Health Foundation to put forward a policy proposal for consideration during this year’s federal budget process.

New ASA position statement on management of primary snoring

A new Australasian Sleep Association position statement on consensus and evidence-based treatment recommendations for primary snoring was recently accepted for publication in Respirology. The position statement, developed by an expert panel of dentists, a sleep surgeon, otolaryngology head and neck surgeon, sleep physicians, and a sleep epidemiologist provides recommendations to clinicians on the management of adults with primary snoring, with a AHI <15.

Breathing easier during sleep case study

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) tracker newsletter have published a case study on the timeline for CPAP development. A group of researchers including Colin Sullivan, Ron Grunstein, Jim Bruderer, Michael Berthon-Jones and Faiq Issa from The University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital received funding from NHMRC to develop what is now the standard treatment OSA.

Vale Michael Berthon Jones 

It is with great sadness we note the passing of Michael Berthon Jones (3/09/1952 - 10/12/2022). Michael was one of Prof Sullivan’s first PhD students, pioneering work in effectiveness of CPAP therapy.  He has been described as a bright fellow who made significant contributions in the development of CPAP, particularly the development of auto CPAP. 

Michael was remembered as someone who was always generous with his time and ideas. He treated others with respect and was interested in their thoughts. In later years he enjoyed golf and astronomy.
