Budget funding for sleep health awareness

The ASA has joined forces with the Sleep Health Foundation to call for Federal Budget funding for sleep health awareness.

"Our joint pre-budget submission has highlighted the urgent need for factual, evidence-based sleep health awareness communication in Australian communities," says the ASA's CEO, Marcia Balzer.

Support for Medicare compliance audit

Last year, ASA met with Medicare compliance staff to learn about compliance priorities for 2025 and 2026.

The intention was to commence compliance and education activities particularly in relation to claiming MBS services while the provider was overseas and MBS item numbers 132 and 133.

ASA has communicated with Medicare compliance staff how sleep studies are reported on a different date to the date of service. Requests for self-audits are seeking clarification from members that they were not overseas on the relevant reporting date.

To assist ASA members, the Clinical Committee has prepared a fact sheet that sets out the relevant details of how sleep studies are conducted and billed. Members are welcome to send this fact sheet along with their self-audit responses back to Medicare.

Please send queries about this issue to the CEO, Marcia Balzer.

Call for expressions of interest

The Sleep Disorders Services Accreditation Program is run jointly by the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA) and the ASA.

The ASA's Sleep Disorders Services Accreditation Advisory Committee (SDSAAC) oversees the program and is seeking for expressions of interest in joining the committee from members based in New Zealand. Either a sleep scientist or sleep physician from New Zealand is needed to ensure geographical representation on the Advisory Committee. The closing date for expressions of interest is Tuesday 24 February 2026

Invitation to participate in research on sleep problems in children with neurodisability

The Kids Sleep Group research team are conducting a study exploring the assessment and management of sleep problems in children with neurodisability. The aim of the project is to better understand the current practices, challenges, and support needs for the assessment and management of sleep problems for allied health clinicians.

We are seeking allied health workers from a variety of disciplines who work with children with neurodisability. Participation involves completing a brief online survey (approximately 10–15 minutes). Participation is entirely voluntary, and all responses will be confidential. Participant information sheet

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the project further, please feel free to contact the Kids Sleep Research Team at [email protected].

COMISA in clinical practice: from phenotyping to scalable digital CBT-I

Co-morbid insomnia and sleep apnoea (COMISA) is increasingly recognised as a highly prevalent condition with substantial clinical impact, often associated with greater symptom burden, reduced quality of life, and more complex treatment pathways. As the evidence base grows, there is a clear need to translate scientific advances into practical, scalable models of care.

Date:  Thursday 26 February 2026
