Recommencement of sleep studies in Melbourne

8 October 2020

The ASA has received several queries from our membership as to when to recommence CPAP and NIV studies, now that Melbourne has transitioned into Second Step restrictions.

At this time, the ASA is recommending that urgent CPAP or NIV studies can proceed with:

  • Appropriate pre-procedure screening (including temperature and COVID-19 symptom screening questionnaires)
  • Appropriate PPE for a COVID-19 negative patient undergoing an aerosol generating procedure (Tier 1 precautions, as per the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines), noting local institutional policy should also be taken into account. This typically includes hand hygiene, the use of a surgical mask and eye protection.

At this time, COVID-19 testing is not required pre-procedure as per DHHS guidelines for an aerosol generating procedure in COVID-19 negative patients. However, this may vary according to local institutional policy.

As we navigate this period of reduced community coronavirus prevalence in Victoria, our clinical practice will focus on increasing patient access to care, while maintaining sensible sleep laboratory protocols and procedures.
