New Medicare item numbers approved for paediatric Level 2 sleep studies

9 October 2025

After several years and two attempts, the Australasian Sleep Association has secured new Medicare Benefits Schedule item numbers for Level 2 sleep studies for children and adolescents!

“It has been a longstanding goal of the ASA to secure public funding for home sleep studies in children and adolescents.” said ASA President, Garun Hamilton, during the opening plenary session of Sleep DownUnder today.

“Finally we will have some item numbers for home PSG for children and adolescents and I am delighted to report success at last in achieving this goal.”

Thanks to a dedicated working group of paediatric sleep physicians, the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) is advising the Australian Minister for Health, Disability and Ageing to list Level 2 PSG for the diagnosis and management of sleep-disordered breathing in children (ages 3-11 years) and adolescents (ages 12-17 years) on the Medicare Benefits Schedule.

Further details will be worked through with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, but MSAC is recommending two new item numbers:

  • Level 2 PSG in children aged 3-11 years
  • Level 2 PSG in adolescents aged 12-17 years.

A paediatric sleep physician (or adult sleep physician for adolescents) must determine that the study is necessary following an in-person or virtual consultation. Equipment may be setup by a parent or caregiver with telehealth support of a sleep scientist.

Proposed fees are $466.30 for 3-11 years and $433.30 for 12-17 years, with 75% and 85% rebates noted.

There is no timeline for implementation of the new item numbers yet. ASA will keep members informed and will continue communication with the Department as the implementation details are worked through.

“I want to recognise the three people who have done all the heavy lifting to achieve this goal,”  said Garun Hamilton this morning at Sleep DownUnder.

“Dr Moya Vandeleur, Professor Karen Waters and our ASA President Elect, Associate Professor Jasneek Chawla, worked tirelessly for several years on this project. Thank you!”
