Dr Alex Sweetman to lead Commonwealth grant program

27 June 2022

The ASA is pleased to announce that Dr Alex Sweetman will join the staff team on 11 July to lead the three-year Commonwealth grant program.

“We’re delighted that Alex will be joining us to take responsibility for the program, particularly the new work to increase sleep health awareness among GPs, psychologists and nurses,” said ASA CEO, Marcia Balzer.

“Alex’s work with the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health at Flinders University will be an enormous asset as we get the new program up and running. His particular expertise researching pathways to improve the treatment of insomnia and co-morbid insomnia and OSA in primary care settings will be invaluable to the success of this exciting new program.”

Alex will be working from Adelaide, maintaining close connections with former colleagues at Flinders University, as he steps into the new role. "Since 2019, I have had brilliant opportunities to lead clinical implementation trials of insomnia and OSA management in primary care through the National Centre for Sleep Health Services Research and recent Partnership Project at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health."

“This is such an amazing opportunity. I feel very honoured to be building on our previous work and translating all we’ve learned about sleep health in primary care into everyday clinical settings,” Alex said.

“No doubt ASA members will be hearing from me on a regular basis as we develop, implement and evaluate the grant program. I’m looking forward to working alongside our members and partner organisations to have a real impact on the sleep health services available to patients across Australia.”
